...And then there are biofuels, whose recent vogue, the World Bank believes, may have been responsible for up to 75% of the recent rise in world food prices. Save the planet; starve the poor.
None of this seems to trouble Mr. Gore. He thinks that simply by declaring an emergency he can help achieve Stakhanovite results. He might recall what the Stakhanovite myth (about the man who mined 14 times his quota of coal in six hours) actually did to the Soviet economy.
A more interesting question is why Mr. Gore remains believable. Perhaps people think that facts ought not to count against a man whose task is to raise our sights, or play Cassandra to unbelieving mortals.
Or maybe he is believed simply because people want something in which to believe. "The readiness for self-sacrifice," wrote Eric Hoffer in "The True Believer," "is contingent on an imperviousness to the realities of life. . . . All active mass movements strive, therefore, to interpose a fact-proof screen between the faithful and the realities of the world. They do this by claiming that the ultimate and absolute truth is already embodied in their doctrine and that there is no truth nor certitude outside it. . . . To rely on the evidence of the senses and of reason is heresy and treason. It is startling to realize how much unbelief is necessary to make belief possible."

And below is an article written in 1922 about the warming of the planet and how glaciers were melting! (You can find the entire article online: The Monthly Weather Review, November 1922, page 589).
THE CHANGING ARCTIC. By GEORGE NICOLAS IFW.
The Arctic seems to be warming up. Reports from
fishermen, seal hunters, and explorers who sail the seas about Sitzbergen and the eastern Arctic, all point to
a radical change in climatic conditions, and hitherto unheard-
of high temperatures in that part of the earth's
...he first noted warmer conditions in 1915, that since
that time it has steadily gotten warmer, and that to-day
the Arctic of that region is not recognizable as the same
region of 1865 to 1917.
Many old landmarks are so changed as to be unrecognizable.
Where formerly great masses of ice were found
there are now often moraines, accumulations of earth and
stones. At many points where glaciers extended far into the
sea they have entirely disappeared." READ
QUESTION FOR AL GORE AND HIS MINIONS: Could it be that we are just in another cycle of the ever changing atmospheric/climate changes that the EARTH goes through in it's billions of years of history? Honest people would look at the evidence and say - yes.
The Environmental Protection Agency is nothing if not power hungry. But they are also lacking in any kind of integrity. They are planning to call the CARBON TAX a fee. What a nice and innocent word. A fee. The Wall Street Journal has a piece called the "Lawnmower Men" in their "Review and Outlook" section describing this power grab and how we will have no say in the matter. The amount of money that they will steal from Americans is mind boggling as they plan to charge a "fee" for use of everything under the sun - boats to planes and lawnmowers to tractors. Anything with an engine. Wrap you head around that one.
Al Gore blew into Washington on Thursday, warning that "our very way of life" is imperiled if the U.S. doesn't end "the carbon age" within 10 years. No one seriously believes such a goal is even remotely plausible. But if you want to know what he and his acolytes think this means in practice, the Environmental Protection Agency has just published the instruction manual. Get ready for the lawnmower inspector near you.
In a huge document released last Friday, the EPA lays out the thousands of carbon controls with which they'd like to shackle the whole economy. Central planning is too artful a term for the EPA's nanomanagement. Thankfully none of it has the force of law -- yet. However, the Bush Administration has done a public service by opening this window on new-wave green thinking like Mr. Gore's, and previewing what Democrats have in mind for next year...
...That's why the global warmists have so much invested in the EPA's final ruling, which will come in the next Administration. Any climate tax involves arguments about costs and benefits; voting to raise energy prices is not conducive to re-election. But if liberals can outsource their policies to the EPA, they can take credit while avoiding any accountability for the huge economic costs they impose.
AMERICA WAKE UP AND LOOK INTO THE FUTURE! IT IS ONE THAT WILL BE RULED BY LITTLE MEN IN WASHINGTON. Is this what our Founding Fathers shed blood and lost treasure for? That we, The People, should be stripped of our wealth for the imaginary evil of carbon dioxide? If ever there was a time to protest and send these bureaucrats back to cower under their rock this is it. Americans Unite to Protect Our Freedoms! (READ WSJ)

One after another, it is becoming clear that all the costly measures so far proposed to cut carbon emissions are pie-in-the-sky.
The drive for "renewable" sources of energy, such as building thousands of wind turbines, is turning out to be little more than self-deception (the combined output of all the 2,000 wind turbines so far built in Britain is less than that of a single, medium-sized, gas-fired power station).
Even the environmentalists have realised that biofuels are a farce, needing more CO2 to produce than they save. The EU's much-vaunted "emissions trading scheme", so far costing us all an estimated £40 billion, has not resulted in any reductions of CO2 emissions whatever.
If the G8's leaders genuinely wanted to cut carbon emissions by 50 per cent over the next 40 years, this would mean taking steps they haven't even begun to contemplate. It would require such a drastic cut in our energy use and standard of living that their peoples would have risen up in mass revolt long before the target was reached.
And nothing better shows up the unreality of all this - as President Bush tried to point out in the summit's only flash of honesty - than the fact that China (not represented at the G8, although it now has the world's fourth largest economy) is already putting out more CO2 than anyone else.
As it builds two new coal-fired power stations a week, China has no more intention than India of joining the Western economic suicide club.
The second reason why this infatuation with cutting carbon emissions is beginning to look extraordinarily reckless is that the whole scientific theory on which it is based now appears distinctly questionable.
The orthodox global-warming thesis, accepted by pretty well every politician in the Western world, but not by a growing number of scientists, is that, as CO2 levels in the atmosphere continue to rise, so too should global temperatures. Unless we can drastically reduce those CO2 levels, the world is thus threatened with catastrophe.
In the past year or two, however, evidence has been piling up to suggest that there may be a fundamental flaw in this theory. Even though atmospheric CO2 has continued to rise to levels not seen since the distant geological past, temperatures have not been following suit.
After 2000 the global temperature curve flattened out at a level significantly lower than the freak year 1998, and in recent months temperatures have dropped to levels not seen since the early 1980s.
Despite the best efforts of the global-warming lobby to keep the scare going, the northern hemisphere enjoyed its coldest winter for decades, and this summer has shown the curve sinking even lower.
Even the warmists are having to find excuses for the fact that their theory doesn't exactly seem to be holding up, conceding that the next 10 years may see a period of global cooling, before the "underlying warming trend" returns worse than ever. READ the entire article.

Voting is a right but it is also a duty-- a duty not just to show up on election day, but a duty to give serious thought to the alternatives on the table and what those alternatives mean for the future of the nation.
What is becoming ever more painfully apparent is that too many people this year-- whether conservative, liberals or whatever-- are all too willing to judge Barack Obama on the basis of his election-year rhetoric, rather than on the record of what he has advocated and done during the past two decades.
Many are for him for no more serious reasons than his mouth and his complexion. The man has become a Rorschach test for the feelings and hopes, not only of those on the left, but also for some on the right as well.
Here is a man who has consistently aided and abetted people who have openly expressed their contempt for this country, both in words and in such deeds as planting bombs to advance their left-wing agenda. READ THE REST HERE.
"Obama's having been born and raised a Muslim and having left the faith to become a Christian make him neither more nor less qualified to become president of the United States. But if he was born and raised a Muslim and is now hiding that fact, this points to a major deceit, a fundamental misrepresentation about himself that has profound implications about his character and his suitability as president." READ
"All this matters, for if Obama once was a Muslim, he is now what Islamic law calls a murtadd (apostate), an ex-Muslim converted to another religion who must be executed. Were he elected president of the United States, this status, clearly, would have large potential implications for his relationship with the Muslim world." READ

Motivated by fear and multiculturalism, too many Westerners are acquiescing to creeping sharia.
Islam divides the world into two parts. The part governed by sharia, or Islamic law, is called the Dar al-Islam, or House of Submission. Everything else is the Dar al-Harb, or House of War, so called because it will take war—holy war, jihad—to bring it into the House of Submission. Over the centuries, this jihad has taken a variety of forms. Two centuries ago, for instance, Muslim pirates from North Africa captured ships and enslaved their crews, leading the U.S. to fight the Barbary Wars of 1801–05 and 1815. In recent decades, the jihadists’ weapon of choice has usually been the terrorist’s bomb; the use of planes as missiles on 9/11 was a variant of this method.
What has not been widely recognized is that the Ayatollah Khomeini’s 1989 fatwa against Satanic Verses author Salman Rushdie introduced a new kind of jihad. Instead of assaulting Western ships or buildings, KhoÂmeini took aim at a fundamental Western freedom: freedom of speech. In recent years, other Islamists have joined this crusade, seeking to undermine Western societies’ basic liberties and extend sharia within those societies.
One observation by Mr. Sowell that I particularly liked is his answer to the following sentence, which he could not include in his book:
"No book can cover all the utter nonsense that politicians speak in an election year". Mr Sowell goes on to give an example of one of these utter nonsenses.
"The notion that what we cannot afford in terms of medical care for 300 million Americans we can somehow afford by sending it through the government and paying for a government bureaucracy on top of all the other costs of medical care."
The interviewer asks Mr. Sowell if he still felt pessimistic about the future and he answers more so!
He continues: "Let's start with Obama, Hillary and McCain."
This interview is WELL worth a listen to. (Listen here).

The engineers in Istanbul were building a super tunnel for trains that would go under the Bosporus and in their digging they found a hugh ancient Roman built harbor from the 4th century A.D. which archaeologists concluded had been most likely destroyed by a tsunami. This discovery has helped the engineers to understand new aspects for this train tunnel that need to be incorporated into the design to avoid devastation by another possible tsunami. See this incredibly interesting video for more on this.
It is simply amazing how this man almost single-handedly held together our new born nation amidst war with the British Empire, internal dissent of all kinds, insurrections and the underhandedness of the French. And he did this without lobbyists, cronyism or much payment. There was nothing in it for him except the burning loyalty and pride in a new United States that would live free from the yoke of tyranny.
Washington was the indispensable man of his time. Is McCain or Obama that man for our time? I have the gravest of doubts.

Since 1982 the US has been in a recession for a total of only 16 months!
Over this period we have doubled output of goods and services and created jobs for an additional 50 million workers!
Many products available only to the rich are now available to everyone - TV, range, cars, air conditioning etc...
25% of poor households own computers and 2 in 5 own their homes!
Read the article. It's amazing how life has gotten better for all Americans and how it's going to get better yet with all the new technology being invented and the amazingly smart people that live and work in our great country. Now if we could just get our politicians to butt out of our lives and let us alone that would really stoke the engines of our creativity!
